What Aura is for
Aura is designed for personal, professional and business use, such as keeping your own content and files, and communicating with people who have agreed to be in contact with you. Contacts are permission-based: people reach you only through a Reach Contract you grant and can revoke.
Aura is built for lawful activity only. We do not promote or permit illegal use. This policy is part of the Terms of Service; if the two ever differ, the Terms control.
What is not allowed
You may not use Aura for any of the following. The examples are illustrations, not a complete list: the rule is the heading, not the example.
- Terrorism and violent extremism. Including material support, recruitment, incitement, and glorification. Example: recruiting people for a violent group, or sending propaganda that celebrates an attack.
- Child sexual exploitation or abuse in any form. There is no exception. Example: sharing, requesting or offering sexual material involving a child, or grooming a child.
- Human trafficking and exploitation. Example: advertising people for forced labour, or coercing someone into work or sex.
- Illegal drugs, weapons and other unlawful goods or services. Example: offering to sell controlled drugs or unlicensed weapons through Aura.
- Fraud, scams, phishing and impersonation. Example: pretending to be a bank, a government office or a colleague to get money or passwords, or running a fake investment scheme.
- Money laundering, terrorist financing and sanctions evasion. Example: using Aura to coordinate moving funds you know are criminal proceeds, or to help someone avoid a sanctions restriction.
- Hacking, malware and attacks on others' systems. Example: sending malware, or organising an attack on a system you have no permission to test.
- Harassment, threats, doxxing and intimate images shared without consent. Example: repeated unwanted contact after being blocked, a threat of violence, publishing someone's home address, or sharing a private image of a person without their agreement.
- Infringing others' intellectual property. Example: distributing pirated copies of paid software or media.
- Spam. Example: bulk messaging people who never granted you a Reach Contract, or buying contact lists to approach.
- Circumventing the permission model or the encryption. Example: trying to message or discover someone who has not granted you a contract, or tampering with the app to defeat its encryption or the routing checks.
- Breaking any applicable law. If it is unlawful where you or the other person live or act, it is not an acceptable use of Aura.
Businesses
If you run a business account, you are responsible for the lawful use of Aura by your members, staff and customers, and for your own compliance with the laws that apply to your activities, such as licences, registrations and tax. A verified domain shows control of a domain; it is not a statement that the business is licensed or lawful.
How this is enforced
We do not scan message content on any surface. We act on user reports and on account and metadata signals, such as unusual volumes of contact requests or repeated reports against one account. On Android and desktop we hold only ciphertext, so we cannot read what is being reported unless the reporter chooses to include it as evidence.
Depending on the seriousness and history, we may warn, restrict, suspend or terminate an account. Reports in the urgent categories (terrorism and violent extremism, child safety, impersonation, illegal goods and services, non-consensual intimate imagery) are reviewed first and may lead to immediate suspension. You can appeal a decision. See Enforcement in the Terms.
Where required by valid legal process, or to prevent serious harm, we may preserve and disclose information we technically hold to competent authorities. See Information for law enforcement and legal requests.
How to report
Use Report on a message, from a contact's "Block or report" action, or from the Safety Center in Settings. Choose the category that fits best: terrorism or violent extremism, child safety, impersonation, illegal goods or services, non-consensual intimate imagery, spam, phishing, harassment, fraud, or other. You may choose to include the text of the reported message as evidence; you do not have to. The person you report is never told who reported them, and you will not be penalised for reporting in good faith.
If those routes do not cover your case, write to [email protected] with the subject "Abuse report". See the support page. If someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first: Aura is not an emergency service.
